In 2019, I tracked the routes of hundreds of cruise ships, recording data from when mishaps occured. Examples of these include passengers and crew falling overboard, medical emergencies where the ship turns back to port, and rescue maneuvers to help other ships in distress.
The most notable example was Viking Sky, which lost power off the coast of Norway in a storm and was perilously drifting towards the rocky shore. There is an intersection between the aesthetics of mapping and the shapes created by the ships’ routes that I am interested in exploring.
